From October 2006 to December 2007 (1 year 3 months) Stanford HAI Affiliate Fellow @ Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) United States2020 Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence-JSK Journalism Fellow @ Stanford University I am one of the two inaugural 2020 Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence-JSK Journalism Fellows at Stanford University, dedicated to improving the systems that control our shared visual experiences. I am especially fascinated by the art and technology of content curation: how are we training algorithmic recommendation systems for taste, and how does what we measure change what we build? From 2019 to 2020 (1 year) San Francisco Bay AreaCreative Director @ Instagram I led experience design at Instagram, building original environments that inspire creativity and storytelling in self-expression. My team collaborated with innovative artists to make things that bring Instagram’s core values to life and celebrate global creators across a community of 1 billion+ worldwide. Our team's resulting designs have since become playbooks that shaped industry standards and subsequent collaborations with artists, designers and creators on and off the platform. From February 2018 to October 2019 (1 year 9 months) San Francisco Bay AreaHead of Creative, Community @ Instagram I oversaw creative direction for the world’s most followed account as it grew to 242m global followers within four years and drove product adoption: notably through the brand’s first redesign, the platform's transition to algorithmic content personalization, and the launch of the Instagram Stories product in 2016. This included managing multiple curation teams, establishing precedents, designing the curation guidelines and editorial standards that powered interest-based recommendations and original content for @instagram, its partners, the Community Lab, and other company outputs. From September 2016 to February 2018 (1 year 6 months) Menlo Park, CaliforniaEditorial Lead @ Instagram As one of Instagram's first 100 employees, I built and led the team that powered in-app content recommendations and content development for @instagram accounts, serving a community that grew from 200 million to 800 million+ worldwide. My team built community through storytelling, growing Instagram's @instagram from 40m to 242 million followers as the platform scaled from 200m to 800+ million users. Drawing on evolving global interests and trends, our team curated outstanding accounts and developed original concepts for @instagram, its partners, and other outputs within the app, and in external installation experiences. From May 2014 to September 2016 (2 years 5 months) Menlo Park, CaliforniaSenior Photo Editor @ National Geographic Award-winning senior photo editor and multimedia lead for National Geographic Magazine, its digital editions and special projects. Partnered with photographers to develop original content across culture, science and issue reportage topics. Launched the @natgeo Instagram account and guided its development for its first two years. Conceived and directed Photographers on Photography to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the magazine. From 2011 to 2014 (3 years) Washington D.C. Metro AreaStanford JSK-HAI Fellow @ Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) Jointly appointed by the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and the John S. Knight Journalism program at Stanford University. From 2019 to 2020 (1 year) United StatesSenior Content Engineer, Camera and Photos @ Apple United States
