About Remy Willems

📖 Summary

I have quite a fondness for problems that are really too hard to solve. At the moment I'm building a Java compiler in my spare time which I like to think is going well but is also a time consuming black hole. I love it though! I'm enjoy puzzles of many kinds, like playing the puzzle game Portal. I've found that designing Portal puzzles myself is even harder than solving them. Try mine if you dare! Also have you played SpaceChem? It's a programming puzzle game with a crazy mix of graphical distributed programming puzzles. Getting back to a slightly more serious note: I participate in the yearly big programming competitions like Google Code Jam and Facebook Hacker Cup. I find them quite challenging but they do land me job interviews. I started out my studies in physics but it turned out I like programming way more than reading books so I switched to computer science. I had been programming for a while and always became annoyed by programming language limitations, so when I saw a Master's with a focus on language design I was sold and signed up the same day.Software Developer @ I worked on several applications in the financial domain, which are characterized by high computational loads requiring concurrency and the application of statistical theory. I took on different roles, one as a full-stack JVM web developer and another as a desktop .NET developer. I took part in organizing developer craftsmanship workshops, and organizing the migration to Git across the company. Techniques I enjoyed using were aspect-oriented programming, reflection, dependency injection and TDD. From August 2013 to Present (2 years 5 months) Rotterdam Area, NetherlandsSoftware Developer @ Primarily I worked on an IDE for a proprietary language. I addressed many typical IDE problems such as: undo/redo management; building a WYSIWYG editor; improving performance of project wide checks for large projects; providing integration with versioning systems; handling project conversion to newer product versions; providing excellent user experience; creating a plug-in architecture using DI frameworks MEF and OSGi. Projects I personally took on were: improving type safety when doing Java foreign language calls by adding support for generic (type polymorphic) types; and improving the performance of reflection code by adding a static analysis step. From August 2011 to Present (4 years 5 months) Intern @ For my master thesis I chose to do an internship. Here I worked on compiler optimizations for a proprietary language. Techniques used were graph rewriting and data-flow analysis techniques such as pointer analysis. From October 2010 to April 2011 (7 months) Rotterdam Area, NetherlandsMaster's, Computer Science, 8.0 @ University of Utrecht From 2009 to 2011 Bachelor's, Physics @ University of Nijmegen From 2006 to 2009 Stedelijk Gymnasium Nijmegen From 2000 to 2006 Remy Willems is skilled in: Java, Haskell, C#, Compilers, Physics, Scrum, Subversion, Git, OSGi, Scala, Software Engineering, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, Web Applications
