Cantin has a degree in criminology from the University of Quebec at Montréal, making her the first ever woman to receive a degree in criminology from that institution. She has also completed a master’s degree in social work. While at the University of Montreal, Cantin worked as a research associate in the department of criminology, where she studied the impact of crime on social welfare services, and conducted field work with Aboriginal communities in the west end of Montreal.
