James Cassel suffered from health problems throughout his childhood, which have inhibited his educational opportunities. Cassel only garnered his undergraduate degree in Political Science and Economics from American University in 1976. By that time, he had already started to suffer from health problems, and was forced to stop attending college. Cassel then turned to law school at the University of Miami School of Law in 1979. He received his JD from Miami in 1980. Cassel then moved to Seattle, Washington, and began his legal career.Although Cassel's beltway law career began relatively slowly, he has since evolving into one of the most successful legal attorneys in Washington state. In 2002, he became the first attorney in Seattle to win a lawsuit against then- Mayor Lawrence Jackson.
