I have been working in a variety of technical roles in the Internet/web industry since 1997, when I worked on some of the first official Major League Baseball (MLB) team websites, as well as built the entire backend for the American Basketball League (ABL) web properties.
I was one of the lead software engineers at Altrec.com, where I created foundational components of the company's e-commerce website & infrastructure that were still in use until recently. I then joined eNIC, the operator of the .CC top-level domain, where I was responsible for key pieces of the registry and registrar platforms prior to the company's acquisition by VeriSign in September of 2001.
Following the VeriSign acquisition, I joined eNIC's founder as lead engineer, and later CTO, of Spam Arrest, the well known anti-spam email service. I spent 4+ years growing the Spam Arrest platform from processing zero to several million emails per day. I later co-founded Eyejot, a web and mobile based video messaging platform, and most recently served at the CTO of TeachStreet, which was acquired by Amazon in January 2012.
I have been twice been finalist for Seattle 2.0's Best Startup Technologist award, taking second place in 2011, and was a finalist in the Geekwire awards' "Best Hire" category in 2012. I have also presented at numerous industry events including DEMO (DEMOFall 2006, and DEMO 2007), Flex 360, and Mongo Seattle.
Co-Founder @ From October 2014 to Present (1 year 3 months) Greater Seattle AreaDirector of Engineering @ I run engineering and product for growth (user acquisition, activation, and retention) and the Porch home report. From April 2014 to October 2014 (7 months) Software Development Manager @ First engineer on Amazon Local Restaurants, a true "startup within a big company".
I worked with the business owner to define the product requirements, do the initial tech design, and recruit, hire, and manage the dev team. My role involved everything from talking to merchants and consumers to coordinating with other teams at Amazon on implementation details and presenting our ideas and progress to company leadership. I also personally contributed to the code base, writing tools to support restaurant, menu, and order management for internal users. From August 2013 to April 2014 (9 months) Greater Seattle AreaSenior Software Engineer (SDE-3), AmazonLocal @ Led engineering efforts on several key initiatives for the Amazon Local merchant engineering team, including the design and implementation of the third-party deal provider platform, merchant-driven deal management interface, and the Amazon Local UK expansion project.
In addition to individual software contributions, I have helped provide organizational leadership through leading tech talks and design reviews, as well as participating in hundreds of interviewing and recruiting activities, and guiding junior developers with mentorship and code reviews. From February 2012 to August 2013 (1 year 7 months) Greater Seattle AreaCTO @ I took over the CTO role at TeachStreet in June 2009, and worked closely with the CEO to oversee all aspects of product development, infrastructure, and all things technical.
I wrote code as well as product specs, managed the development team, and helped guide strategy and tactical decisions.
As part of a scrappy startup, I also took out the trash and did dishes. From June 2009 to February 2012 (2 years 9 months) Senior Engineer @ After following the launch of TeachStreet closely since their start, I was presented the opportunity to join the team as an individual software contributor, where I was able to hone my Ruby, Rails, and PostgreSQL skills, while sharing my expertise in architecture, design, and infrastructure.

Eyejot was launched at the DEMO 07 conference in January of 2007.
As a founder and the CTO, I was responsible for all technical aspects of the platform, as well as helping shape the overall direction and focus of the company, and being a public face and evangelist for the platform at industry events and conferences.

From September 2006 to November 2006 (3 months) CTO & Principal Developer @ Spam Arrest is the leading challenge-response based anti-spam service. During my tenure, I led all aspects of Spam Arrest's software architecture and development, as well as technical operations, including building out our colocated server infrastructure, and later restructuring the platform to leverage Amazon Web Services including S3 and EC2.
Performance, reliability, and availability are the primary goals of the Spam Arrest sevice, which at its peak was in Alexa.com's top 1000 internet sites.
Technologies: Java, Javamail, JMS, Memcached, Linux, Mysql, Email Protocols (IMAP/POP3/SMTP). From May 2002 to November 2006 (4 years 7 months) Senior Programmer @ Developed software to facilitate registry and registrar operations for several top level domains, including .CC. Some of my projects included:
* a private labelled domain reseller system
* a common registry interface enabling eNIC and resellers to connect to various disparate registries (HTTP,XML-RPC,RRP,EPP,SMTP, and custom protocols) via a single interface
* an RFC 2832-compliant registry-registrar-protocol (RRP) server, allowing .CC and other TLD registries to be accessed in the same manner as .COM. This project was completed in several weeks, with one other developer, using just the rfc and business rule documents from VeriSign as the design specification.
Technologies used: Perl, Java, MySQL, Linux, FreeBSD, DNS/BIND From August 2000 to March 2002 (1 year 8 months) Programmer @ Altrec is an online retailer of outdoor lifestyle products. As part of the early development team, I developed much of the company's core platform and infrastructure, from core e-commerce components and website functionality to backend applications for merchandising and production use.
