The medal was given in recognition of his actions on 1 September 2002, when he piloted aU.S. Air Force helicopter to transport members of the anti-Taliban forces from Kunar province to the safety of an area near the provincial capital of Bagram, Afghanistan. Dehgan effectively used what was believed to be an amphibious landing craft to enter the enemy-held sector and lead the elements of the Joint Extractive Forces campaign to extricate the wounded, sick, and helpless from the fighting.
