💼 Past Experience

Kurtin’s early experiences in the cannabis industry can be traced back to his time as CEO and co-founder of the former TLB Cannabis Inc. in February 2016. TLB was shut down in 2018 after SAR’s B.C. Securities Commission found that TLB had sold securities without prior disclosure and without complying with applicable Canadian securities laws. In January 2018, Kurtin started his new venture Ascend Wellness Holdings, LLC in order to help people who are incarcerated and have lost their jobs due to cannabis prohibition. Ascend Wellness Holdings is a mobile-friendly online dispensary that provides just-in-time correctional services to inmates incarcerated in the Boston area.Kurtin is a Libertarian on a quest to end mass incarceration of nonviolent criminality. He is also a father and grandfather, and a libertarian values investor.Kurtin has started several businesses in his career, including investing in the cannabis industry, real estate and hospitality, and hedge funds focused on European restructuring.Kurtin has worked in finance for over 10 years. He holds a degree in economics from Northeastern University and a Juris Doctorate from Boston University.

Abner Kurtin did his undergraduate work at Northeastern University where he majoring in Political Science. After completing his undergraduate studies he worked as a research associate at the New America Foundation from 1992-1996, then he joined the investment desk of the Goldman Sachs Group from 1996-1998. In 1998, he moved up toEllen P. Dhanani’s newly created investment banking boutique at the investment firm, Citigroup. There he worked for a year before joining Fortress Investment Group where he worked for two years. He then rejoined Citigroup as an investment associate. There he worked for two years before becoming a senior investment associate. In 2001, he started his own investment firm, Ascend Wellness Holdings.After Excellent achievement in his early work with Ascend Wellness Holdings, they merged with JM10 Partners and after a year, he rejoined JM10 Partners as an investment banker. He also started his own investment firm K Capital where he was managing director from January 2000 to April 2009. He then worked at The Baupost Group where he was investment management from July 1994 to January 1999. In 1999, he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts and joined the investment desk of the Goldman Sachs Group, where he worked for two years until leaving in 2001 to start his own investment firm Ascend Wellness Holdings with his brother. He has been with Ascend Wellness Holdings for 8 years and 1 month while with JM10 Partners and K Capital. In the cannabis industry, he is currently the Managing Member at CA2 Group. In real estate and hospitality, he is the founder at K Capital where he was the managing director from January 2000 to April 2009. He also started his own real estate and hospitality investment firm, The Baupost Group in July 1994. He is an advocate for ending mass incarceration of nonviolent criminals and is currently on a quest to do so. He is also a Libertarian.
