The National Academies offers advice on science, engineering, and health matters. It serves collectively as the scientific national academy for the United States and comprises of four organizations: the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and the National Research Council (NRC). Most of its work is conducted through seven major programs; Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, Earth and Life Studies, Engineering and Physical Sciences, Institute of Medicine, Policy and Global Affairs, Transportation Research Board, and the NAS Gulf Research Program. Its offerings include peer-reviewed consensus reports; conferences, workshops, symposia, roundtables, standing committees, and other gatherings; journals, periodicals, magazines, and publications that cover critical issues of science, technology, and health; and educational resources for teachers and students, fellowships, and career guides. Its journals include the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research Journal, and Transportation Research Record. The National Academies was established in 1863 and is based in Washington, District of Columbia.
