Sam Calderbank started his career as a bartender at the age of 18 in Liverpool, UK. In this role, Calderbank played a major role in developing and approving all food menus as well as overseeing all aspects of service and guest experience.Calderbank came to the United States in 2006 to join the Director of Operations position at Thomas Keller Restaurants Group,NASDAQ:TMKS. At TMKS, Calderbank led the East Coast office, responsible for developing and oversees all restaurants and properties in the Eastern Time Zone. This included managing the food and beverage operations of company-owned and -operated restaurants located in New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.During his time with TMKS, Calderbank produced three successful restaurant meal programs and received numerous accolades. These programs included the New England Beef and Lamb entrusted with the prestigious aroma Award, the Generation three wineza award, and the prestigious James Beard Award nomination.In his role at TMKS, Calderbank was also responsible for the development and launch of Maze, a restaurant located in the heart of Times Square. Maze was awarded the 2014 James Beard Award for Best New Establishment and the 2015 Best Regional Wedding Planner in America award.At TMKS, Calderbank was also a major force in the development of the company’s iPad app. This app was first released in December of 2016 and has received overwhelmingly positive feedback. The app is used by over 1,000 TMKS restaurants to provide guests with sophisticated guest management features and easy on-the-go streaming of dining experiences.In his final role at TMKS, Calderbank was responsible for the development and launch of The salad bar. This program was responsible for introducing guests to the concept of salad dining through a variety of served-fresh salads and contemporary sides.Calderbank’s previous work experience has spanned different phases of business from bartender to restaurant manager to iPad developer and beyond. Samoa's young Sam Calderbank already held a commanding presence in the language classroom, scoring high marks in his 2003-2004 academic year. Calderbank studied Lingo and Dialectology at Cowley Language College, remarking "I really enjoyed the course and was able to develop my swiftly and effectively both in the language and in the research that I did. I found the teaching methods really useful and the bunch of others who took the course also gave me a lot of tips and tricks."Later, Calderbank moved on to Rainford High School, where he achieved very good grades in his general studies and topped the class in his A-level linguistics course. "I was really happy with my progress and the number of compliments I got from my classmates," Calderbank comments. "I’d like to specialise in linguistics so I can continue developing my skills and knowledge in this important field." Hence, Calderbank chose to study linguistics at the University of Durham, a university which he describes as one with a "huge pool of researchers and students who are passionate about language and linguistics." At the University of Durham, he has found fruitful ground in his research pursuits, most notably in the field of Dialectology, where Calderbank has created a number of grammatical studies of Samoan and Tongan dialects.As such, Calderbank has a good understanding of the various features of these languages, and is in the process of completing a ambitious project on the Morphology of Tongan Dialects, which is an important expansion of his current work in the field. Calderbank is also nearing the completion of a large research project on Dialect Diachronicity and Change in Samoan, which will explore the changing sharing of dialect features between Northern and Southern Samoa.Hence, Calderbank is in a very good position to contribute to the field of linguistics, and is already in the early stages of developing a excellent research assemblage. In fact, Calderbank is confident that his research work in the field will contribute immensely to the understanding and description of the Samoan language and its dialects.
