I am a physicist and MBA (for lacking of better terms) by training, with strong interests on building innovative technology.
I have a multidiscipline background in Science & Engineering, Business & Management, Art & Design. Built microscopes, studied DNA hairpin folding, enrolled in a business school, designed and built websites and apps, is founding a company to help people discover the best careers for them.
Founder and CEO @ For new graduates and people making career transitions, knowing what to do, getting ready, and connecting to who can help is a very complex process. Using our users' own words - "it's a daunting task. I am simply overwhelmed."
Wolfe Career simplifies this complex process and gives you the clarity and confidence you need in career transitions. We use publicly available data, people’s reflections on their careers, and machine learning algorithms to help people best navigate their career pathways. We empower you with your alumni network. Assess, prepare, and connect - we make career transitions simple and easy.
We are currently working with Stanford Career Development Center to develop our alpha.
Some of my activities are: talk to my users and try to understand their problems; design the prototype from paper and pencil to draw it on Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop; plan strategically of the directions; recruiting top engineering and business talents; train them; guide them to one direction; empower them; architect the information systems (right now we are a python house because of the heavy data focus); setting up databases (postgres plus some file systems), code up the backend (Pyramid - very flexible) and tests, and set up the frontend (Google Polymer + AngularJS + Sass); organize events for initial data and users. It's a startup, and I need wear many different hats. From August 2014 to Present (1 year 3 months) Palo AltoSenior Software Engineer @ Granular is a software and analytics platform that helps farmers operate more efficiently and make better business decisions. We are a vertical SaaS company that serves one of the world's largest ($3 trillion revenue) and most important industries. Granular is helping farmers improve their efficiency, yields, and profits while managing their environmental footprint.
Our product is in beta with several large farms in Midwest and we will be rolling out commercially in a few months. We are rapidly scaling up our development team in San Francisco and our sales and client services team nationwide. Granular is funded by Andreessen Horowitz, Google Ventures and Khosla Ventures. For more information about Granular, please see http://www.granular.ag/.
As one full-stack founding engineer, working in a team, I designed and built some crucial parts of our sophisticated enterprise software across the technology stack (Python Pyramid, Postgres, AngularJS, etc.) From June 2013 to August 2014 (1 year 3 months) San Francisco Bay AreaSoftware Engineer @ Solum is the leading provider of soil testing technology and soil fertility analytics to the precision agriculture industry. The business was acquired by The Climate Corporation in February 2014.
For more information about Solum, please see http://solum.ag/. From June 2013 to February 2014 (9 months) San FranciscoCo-founder & CEO @ Dujour is founded to bring fashion back to everyday people (www.dujour.im). Our iOS App, keekaa – your fashion companion (www.keekaa.com), connects people in fashion so that people can have personal and relevant discussions on fashion topics ranging from makeup to how to dress for a specific body-type. We were part of StartX (startx.stanford.edu). I led my team, designed the products, hold board meetings with CEOs, VCs, and experts in the industry, and pitched to investors.
Skills learned: new venture formation, team formation, product management, Web & iOS UX design, web front-end programming, agile software development, leadership. From June 2012 to January 2013 (8 months) StartXPh.D. Candidate @ DNA Hairpin Folding Dynamics & Mechanisms
- Designed and implemented a comprehensive study to investigate the DNA hairpin folding dynamics by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. My results resolved several controversies in the literature and provided a comprehensive understanding of DNA hairpin folding mechanisms.
Single Molecule Fluorescence Tracking + FRET
- further developed single molecule tracking microscope to allow FRET detection. This technique can revolutionize the way we measure folding dynamics of bio-molecules: we measure the molecules' folding in their native condition.
Skills learned: correlation analysis and statistical inference, programming, analog circuits, modeling and simulation, nucleic acid dye labeling and purification, control and feedback theory and optics. From September 2006 to December 2012 (6 years 4 months) Research Intern @ Streamlined and optimized PacBio’s Optical Material Testing Program. Because of my work, the efficiency of this program increased by a factor of 10.
Skills learned: biotechnology, statistics and optics. From June 2010 to October 2010 (5 months) San Francisco Bay AreaResearch Scientist Intern @ Theoretically modeled and simulated (finite element analysis) how cardiac lesion is created by microwave. This creates a thorough understanding of the physics of the product, which guided and accelerated the key product FLEX10 design.
Skills learned: medical device, modeling and simulation, Matlab programming. From June 2007 to September 2007 (4 months)
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Applied Physics @ Stanford University From 2006 to 2012 Ph.D. Minor, Management Science & Engineering, Engineering Physics/Applied Physics @ Stanford University From 2008 to 2010 Certificate, Stanford Ignite, Summer Institute of Entrepreneurship @ Stanford University Graduate School of Business From 2008 to 2008 Bachelor's degree, Physics @ California Institute of Technology From 2003 to 2006 Physics. @ Pasadena City College From 2002 to 2003 Michael Zhang is skilled in: Entrepreneurship, Web Design, Web Development, full stack software..., Python, Optics, Biotechnology, CSS, JavaScript, agile software..., Statistical Signal..., Machine Learning, AngularJS, Photography, HTML, Medical Devices, Lifesciences, Biophysics, Program Management, Healthcare, Django, Pyramid, Photoshop, Illustrator, Medical Imaging, Analog Circuit, Product Development, Product Management, Spectroscopy, Matlab, Simulations, Science, Agile Methodologies
