💼 Past Experience

The role of CEO at Mary Furlong & Associates from 1995-2000As CEO of Mary Furlong & Associates, I was responsible for all aspects of the company which included marketing, development, and day-to-day operations. I also acted as chairman and CEO for six years from1996-2002. My responsibilities included leading our company through a difficult time in the early 1990s, during which we lost our largest customer and posted a second-worst net income. Despite these setbacks, Ich was able to keep the company afloat and grow it in although it was not a popular company at the time.Ich was also instrumental in starting and leading the SAN Francisco based ThirdAge Media. ThirdAge Media was once the largest online news and information company in the United States. In 2002, Ich sold ThirdAge Media to Comcast for $461 million. During my time at ThirdAge Media, I was able to grow the company to the position of the second largest online news company in the United States and increase its readership by more than 20%. I was also able to create new divisions such as webcasting and social media, which gave ThirdAge Media a presence on a wider spectrum of platforms.After leaving ThirdAge Media, I founded and led Mary Furlong & Associates, a consulting firm which specializes in entrepreneuring and business development. In my time as CEO of Mary Furlong & Associates, I have developed over 50 businesses, the most recent of which is AARP. Additionally, I am a Dean’s Executive Professor of Entrepreneurship at Santa Clara University.The role of Advisor to Ziegler Link-Age Longevity FundsI am also currently the Advisor to Ziegler Link-Age Longevity Funds. I was first appointed to this position in October, 2011. At Ziegler Link-Age Longevity Funds, I am responsible for providing reliable and unbiased advice to our clients on the subject of longevity. I have worked with a variety of clients, both large and small, including many high-profile companies, such as Apple, Visa, Comcast, and Google.My experience with advised companies has been very beneficial. I have been able to develop strong relationships with my clients and learn a lot about their businesses. Additionally, I have been able to criticize, recommend, and pay close attention to their problems and solutions in order to provide the best advice to my clients. Overall, I have been very impressed with the results I have achieved with my work at Ziegler Link-Age Longevity Funds.

🎓 Education

Mary Furlong has an Edgar Currier Scholarship in educational administration and has been awarded The teacher's gold award by the American Pre-School Teacher's Association. She has also been a finalist for the NEA grant, The Ready Scholar Award. Her professional experience includes four years as assistant superintendent of education for a city school system in Florida and four years as a setting supervisor of early childhood education for a school district in California.Furlong has a background in education administration that borders on the professional. She holds an Ed. D. from the University of Southern California in 1976 and a Bachelor's Degree from Holy Name University in 1966. From these experiences, she has developed a greater understanding of the educational process and a greater interest in its effects on children. For her current position as assistant superintendent of education for a city school system in Florida, she took on a variety of responsibilities that included daily control of a large school system with over 700 students and an additional 250 students in charters. In addition, she was responsible for the formulation and implementation of school reform programs. In California, she was responsible for the formulation and implementation of early childhood education policy and for the development of the Early Childhood Education program of the California State of California.While her background in education administration lays the groundwork for a successful career in education, it is her experience in the field of early childhood education that instils the greatest interest in Furlong. She has spent four years working with parents and children in a variety of settings to develop policies and programs that impact the early childhood education of children in California. This experience has taught her something new about the ways that early childhood education can benefit children and families. In her opinion, early childhood education is a “critical, essential crucible in which the education of young children and their families can take root.”Her latest position as assistant superintendent of education for a city school system in Florida provides her with the opportunity to apply her experience in early childhood education to the work of a school system of over 700 students and an additional 250 students in charters. Furlong is excited to bring her knowledge and skills to the work of her school system and to contribute to the development of the educational opportunities for students in Florida.While her background in education administration lays the groundwork for a successful career in education, it is her experience in the field of early childhood education that instils the greatest interest in Furlong.
