I saw the opportunity to provide a "yellow pages" style directory to service the fast-growing Hispanic community in London. The publication would also serve as a resource for others wishing to embrace the Spanish language and Latin-American culture. The project took this concept to inception in three stages: 1. Researching the diverse Hispanic communities of London and creating a database of every business or service that spoke Spanish. 2. Negotiating sponsors and advertisers to fund the project. This was facilitated by establishing links with the London embassies and missions of the 23 countries that hold Spanish as an official language, as well as the those with a significant Hispanic population such as the USA. 3. Distributing the publication to the major centres of the Hispanic community in London and engaging those communities in the project. Latest estimates have shown there are between 700,000 to 1,000,000 Latin Americans in the UK. Brazilians make up the largest group of around 200,000, then there are about 130 - 160,000 Colombians, 70 - 90,000 Ecuadorians and 10 - 15,000 Peruvians. The UK 2001 census records 55,000 Spaniards resident in the UK. Some 800,000 salsa classes take place every night in the UK. From February 2000 to October 2001 (1 year 9 months) Commercial Manager and Quantity Surveyor @ Procurement, Account Management, Contractual Negotiations, Cost Management, Project Management. Mount Vernon, Frognal Rise, Hampstead, London NW3 Clients: Marylebone Warwick Balfour and Sincere Group Value: £44m project Redevelopment of former Mount Vernon Hospital into 63 exclusive residential apartments. Station Regeneration Programme Client: Network Rail (Railtrack) Value: £151million project The renovation of 450 stations and 30 depots across London, Northern Home Counties, and East Anglia. There was an individual implementation contract for each package of work, which was carried out on a design and build basis. The individual contract scopes varied widely, and included new build and refurbishment to depots and stations. Other schemes included bridge replacements, step free access and smaller maintenance projects. With such a large area to cover, logistics and control were challenges. My key deliverable was to collate the monthly accounts from 30 area quantity surveyors and present them to the client and auditor for sign-off.
