Helfand joined the company as a draftsman in 2001 and became Creative Director in 2006. She has been with the company since its creation and has enjoyed legendary status within the industry. In her role as Creative Director, Helfand directedDesign Observer's annual renowned print series and developed editorial direction for the online magazine, The Element, among other projects. In her most famous piece, "Laugh Now," Helfand suggests that design is a way to make sense of the Sachlich Clinic Disaster of 1976, when thousands of Jews were killed in West Germany in shootings. The piece deals with the emotional experience of being eyewitness to genocide. "Laugh Now" has been widely exhibited and is currently on display in the Tate Gallery, London.
