Independent Director @ Energy Sector Security Consortium From September 2011 to March 2014 (2 years 7 months) Portland, ORFounder and Director of Research @ IT Process Institute From September 2002 to July 2010 (7 years 11 months) Committee Member @ Institute of Internal Auditors, Advanced Technology Committee From May 2002 to January 2010 (7 years 9 months) Author, Researcher @ Book: "The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win" I am working on my third and fourth books, "The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win" (to be released on January 15, 2013) and "The DevOps Cookbook" (to be released in mid-2013). Both are the culmination of over 13 years of researching both high-performing and low-performing IT organizations, as well as benchmarking over 1500 IT organizations to help inform what behaviors simultaneously advance business and information security objectives."The Phoenix Project" describes the fall and eventual triumph of Steve Masters, the CEO of a 100 year old, $4B/year company at the brink of existential failure. The book begins when the board of directors puts him on notice that he must either close the gap with the competition, or be replaced with a younger, more aggressive and technology-savvy executive. The two most critical promised projects necessary to achieve this have a high reliance on IT, and are years late and way over budget. The CEO quickly learns that his survival now depends upon the success of IT and the various tribes to work together. And while he believes that IT is not their core competency, he learns that the company cannot function without it, and is therefore a competency that they must develop. “The DevOps Cookbook” provides the prescriptive steps to replicate what the “high performing DevOps organizations” have done that results in their extraordinary performance outcomes. Very much like the intent behind the Visible Ops book, our goal is to create the prescriptive guidance to create the culture, values, processes, procedures and daily work so that we can repeatedly replicate their results. Portland, OregonCTO and Founder @ Tripwire, Inc. Gene Kim is the CTO and founder of Tripwire, Inc. In 1992, he co-authored Tripwire while at Purdue University with Dr. Gene Spafford. Since then, Tripwire has been adopted by more than 5,500 enterprises worldwide. Since 1999, he has been studying high performing IT operations and security organizations, which led Gene to co-found the IT Process Institute (ITPI) in 2004, an organization dedicated to research, benchmarking and developing prescriptive guidance for IT operations, security management, and auditors. This same year Gene co-authored the "Visible Ops Handbook: Implementing ITIL in Four Practical And Auditable Steps" which has since sold over 75,000 copies. And, he was a principal investigator on the IT Controls Performance Study project, completed in 2006.Gene currently serves on the Advanced Technology Committee for the Institute of Internal Auditors where he is part of the GAIT task force, which has created guidance on how to scope IT general controls for SOX-404. In 2007, ComputerWorld named as part of the prestigious “40 Innovative IT People Under The Age Of 40” list, and was given the Outstanding Alumnus Award by the Department of Computer Sciences at Purdue University for achievement and leadership in the profession.
