From March 2015 to Present (10 months) San Francisco Bay AreaSenior Research Associate @ I was a senior project leader on a five-year, education reform project that supported a statewide network of nine school districts implementing systemic strategies to improve career and college readiness. Carried out in partnership with the California Center for College and Career (ConnectEd) and funded by the Irvine Foundation, the project aimed to build the leadership and organizational capacity of teams of multi-function stakeholders in education – teachers, principals, superintendents, district administrators, school board members, community members, business representatives). I led and managed the network and designed and implemented a multi-year scope and sequence of executive leadership development in design thinking, change management, high-performing organizations, and distributed leadership. From 2010 to 2015 (5 years) Senior Research Associate @ I was a senior project leader and ran a national network of urban school districts, which included Albuquerque, Alexandria, Dallas, Miami, San Francisco. The project aimed to build senior-level district leadership capacity to manage complex organizational change and turn around failing high schools. I designed and managed network activities, residencies, institutes, and events. The project produced a series of case studies on leadership and reform strategies. From 2007 to 2011 (4 years) Associate Director, School Redesign Network @ I worked with a team of researchers and practitioners on a national project funded by the Gates Foundation developing resources to support and guide the redesign of large comprehensive high schools into innovative models of smaller learning communities – charter schools, theme-based academies, small schools within schools, and small, autonomous schools.
@ Founded a consortium of Bay Area high schools seeking to design and implement innovative approaches for assessing student learning. Recruited national experts in assessment to lead workshops for professional training.
@ Provided coaching and technical assistance to schools piloting new models of performance-based student assessment (Graduation Portfolios, Senior Exhibitions, committee-based reviews of college readiness, culminating assessments.
@ Developed partnerships with charter management organizations and private schools in the Bay Area and Los Angeles (Envisions Learning Partners, Big Picture Learning, the Coalition of Essential Schools, Wildwood Academy, Los Angeles Small Schools Collective) to identify innovative practices in performance-based student assessment.
@ Created toolkit on high school redesign (e.g. discussion protocols, readings, literature reviews, planning templates, checklists, sample agendas). Integrated the toolkit for providing professional development, coaching, and technical assistance to schools.
@ Designed protocols for using the toolkit for coaching and training purposes. Prototyped materials and activities in staff development and technical assistance provided to James Logan High School in New Haven Unified School District and Jefferson High School in Daly City, California.
@ Organized and led school study visits for teams of educators and school leaders from across the country to study innovative models of smaller learning communities and highly-developed systems of performance-based student assessment at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo and in New York City. From 2004 to 2007 (3 years) Assistant Policy Adviser @ I worked with a dynamic team of senior policy advisers to develop the evidentiary base for drafting policy proposals related to the teaching profession in the UK. I was responsible for advising the Chief Executive and council members on US research on best practices and policies on teacher quality, professional development, recruitment, induction, retention, and preparation. From 2003 to 2003 (less than a year) London, United KingdomCoordinator for Policy Development, Research Associate @ I contributed to the research and writing for a blue ribbon commission that issued two reports that changed the direction of state- and national- policies on the teaching profession. I also authored two briefing papers which identified exemplary models and programs, the first was on a district-union-business partnership in Cincinnati and a second was on five-year, university based teacher education programs.
The report, "What Matters Most: Teaching for America's Future" was well-received, received attention from President Clinton, and galvanized a group of states to implement recommendations. I coordinated this network of twelve states and served as the point person for state task forces of governors' aides, legislators, state superintendents, union and university presidents. I initiated a monthly newsletter to support the sharing of progress and challenges. From 1995 to 1998 (3 years) Classroom Teacher @ I taught in this groundbreaking, experimental high school founded by MacArthur Fellow, Deborah Meier, a school in East Harlem. The school was among the first wave of innovative schools which led to the national charter school movement. From 1992 to 1994 (2 years)
