Thomas Leya

Thomas Leya is a distinguished Senior Researcher and the Group Manager & Curator of CCCryo — the Culture Collection of Cryophilic Algae — at Fraunhofer IZI-BB. Since joining the institute in July 2014, Thomas has played a pivotal role in advancing cryobiology, microalgae research, and environmental sciences, leveraging his extensive expertise in molecular biology, biotechnology, and cell culture. His current role involves overseeing the strategic development and management of CCCryo, which serves as a vital biorepository for extremophilic algae species adapted to cold environments. This collection not only supports fundamental research into cryophilic organisms but also catalyzes the development of innovative bioproducts with applications in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and sustainable biotechnologies.
