Sylvie Cupferman

Sylvie Cupferman currently serves as an Expert in Cosmetic Microbiology at CEN (European Committee for Standardization) and CENELEC, where she plays a pivotal role in shaping European standards that underpin the safety, quality, and microbiological integrity of cosmetic products. Her expertise is instrumental in developing and harmonizing microbiological limits and testing guidelines, ensuring that cosmetic formulations meet rigorous safety criteria across the industry. As a Senior Scientist and L'Oréal Fellow Scientist, Sylvie leverages her extensive experience in microbiological testing, product development, and laboratory automation to inform standardization efforts that directly impact consumer safety and product efficacy.

In her current role, Sylvie leads key projects such as the development of ISO 17516, which establishes microbiological limits for cosmetic products, and ISO TR 19838, offering guidelines for applying microbiological standards effectively. She also co-leads ISO TR 18811, focusing on the stability testing of cosmetics, ensuring that microbiological stability is maintained throughout a product’s shelf life. Her leadership extends to her presidency of the AFNOR S91K Cosmetics Commission, where she influences national standards and promotes best practices within the industry.

Sylvie’s expertise is further demonstrated through her convenorship of ISO TC217 WG1, dedicated to microbiology standards and limits, and her previous role as Chair of Cosmetics Europe's Expert Team on Microbiological Protection. Her comprehensive knowledge of microbiological testing, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and microbiological safety assessments positions her as a key contributor to the development of industry-wide microbiological standards. Her work ensures that cosmetic products are not only innovative but also safe and compliant with international regulations, reinforcing her reputation as a leading authority in cosmetic microbiology.
