Sofia Koller currently serves as a Senior Research Analyst at the Counter Extremism Project (CEP), where she plays a pivotal role in advancing the organization’s mission to combat Islamist extremism and terrorism across Europe and the Middle East. In this capacity, Sofia leverages her extensive expertise in policy analysis, terrorism research, and counter-terrorism strategies to produce comprehensive reports and actionable insights on foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs), with a particular focus on the challenges posed by ISIS returnees in France and Germany. Her work involves detailed analysis of prosecution cases, rehabilitation programs, and reintegration efforts, providing valuable data to inform policymakers and law enforcement agencies.

Sofia’s research is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach, combining her linguistic skills in German, English, French, Spanish, and basic Arabic with her deep understanding of Middle East politics and terrorism dynamics. Her proficiency in conducting interviews and her experience in Strafverfolgung (criminal prosecution) enable her to gather nuanced insights from diverse stakeholders, including government officials, security experts, and community organizations. At CEP, Sofia is involved in key projects that analyze the effectiveness of deradicalization and rehabilitation programs, assess the risks associated with returning foreign fighters, and develop strategic recommendations to prevent radicalization.
