We are an internationally recognized pioneer in pharmacy practice, education, and research, developing leaders who improve health worldwide. Our research enterprise spans the drug development cycle from discovery, development, and delivery to optimization, outcomes, and patient care. The School is also No. 1 among U.S. schools and colleges of pharmacy for external research funding, reaching an all-time high of more than $99.3 million in federal fiscal year 2024. We educate nearly 600 Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students on campuses in Chapel Hill and Asheville, and we are home to more than 200 graduate students and nearly 90 postdoctoral scholars. For more than 45 years, our postdoctoral fellowship program has partnered with the biopharmaceutical industry to provide a unique training experience that combines academic research with a real-world industry drug development experience. We lead four NIH-funded T32 training programs: three at the postdoctoral level in cancer nanotechnology, adult and pediatric clinical pharmacology, and one at the predoctoral level in chemical biology. In addition to a PharmD, we offer Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Master of Professional Science in Regulatory Science (MPS), and Master of Science (MS) in Health System Pharmacy Administration degrees, along with a Master in Global Medicines Development and a Minor in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The School’s translational institute, Eshelman Innovation, is a healthcare innovation engine that bridges academia and entrepreneurship to turn groundbreaking ideas into real products and services.
