Lars Regestein

Dr. Lars Regestein currently serves as the Head of Process Development and Deputy Department Head of the Bio Pilot Plant at the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute. In this strategic role, he oversees the design, optimization, and scale-up of bioprocesses spanning from pico- to cubic-meter volumes, with a particular emphasis on pressure fermentation techniques for process intensification. His expertise in biochemical engineering and bioprocess development enables the institute to explore innovative cultivation strategies, especially for challenging microbial systems such as viscous or morphologically complex microorganisms.

Lars is actively involved in pioneering projects that focus on developing and testing online measurement techniques for defined mixed and cocultures, which are crucial for real-time process control and optimization. His work often involves process development for relatively unknown microorganisms, aiming to discover and isolate novel secondary metabolites with potential pharmaceutical or biotechnological applications. His deep understanding of high cell density fermentation and pressure fermentation processes allows him to improve yields, reduce production times, and enhance overall process robustness.

By integrating advanced bioreactor technologies with process analytical tools, Lars ensures that the institute remains at the forefront of natural product research and bioprocess innovation.
