Jesse Massotto

Jesse Massotto currently serves as the Laboratory Safety Manager at the University of Connecticut’s Institute of Materials Science, where he plays a pivotal role in fostering a safe and compliant research environment for over 100 students and 30 wet labs. In this capacity, Jesse leverages his extensive expertise in chemical safety, materials characterization, and project management to oversee daily laboratory operations, ensuring adherence to federal and state regulations. His responsibilities include conducting comprehensive compliance reviews, developing and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs), and delivering targeted training programs focused on safe handling of polymers, nanomaterials, and other advanced materials. Jesse’s leadership extends to managing interdepartmental teams on both short-term initiatives and long-term strategic projects, often involving complex chemical safety protocols and environmental health considerations.

A key aspect of Jesse’s role involves streamlining safety protocols for diverse research activities, including UV/Vis spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, ensuring that all research complies with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. His background in surface chemistry and materials science enhances his ability to provide technical assistance on specialized projects, such as polymer synthesis and characterization. Additionally, Jesse has been instrumental in establishing and expanding chemical inventory management systems and dry storage solutions, which have significantly improved safety and operational efficiency within the labs. His ongoing Master’s studies in Materials Science further deepen his understanding of cutting-edge research, enabling him to bridge academic innovation with practical safety management. Through his leadership, Jesse continues to advance a culture of safety, compliance, and scientific excellence at the University of Connecticut.
