About Edward Wassell

Edward Wassell is a seasoned Electronics Engineer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, where he leverages over a decade of hands-on experience in semiconductor process engineering to drive innovative projects within the aerospace sector. Currently, Edward plays a pivotal role in the fabrication of focal plane components for the European Space Agency's Athena X-IFU mission. His expertise is particularly evident in the development of a microcalorimeter detector array, which features advanced transition edge sensor pixels coupled with cantilevered X-ray absorbers. This intricate design requires not only a deep understanding of photolithography and electrical engineering but also the ability to navigate the complexities of flexible niobium superconducting wiring that seamlessly connects the detector array to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) readout array, even as it bends around a challenging 90-degree corner.

Edward's responsibilities extend beyond technical execution; he is instrumental in managing the launch of new projects by conducting comprehensive trade studies, defining critical process parameters, and determining equipment requirements. His collaborative approach ensures that team activities are well-coordinated, fostering an environment where innovative solutions can thrive. With a strong foundation in system design and space systems, Edward excels in communicating complex ideas effectively, both in oral presentations and written documentation. His unique blend of technical acumen and program management skills positions him as a key contributor to NASA's mission of advancing space exploration and technology development, making him a valuable asset to the Goddard Space Flight Center and the broader aerospace community.
