The Welsh Language Board is a Welsh Assembly Government Sponsored Body which has a statutory duty to promote and facilitate the use of the Welsh language. Its core activity is to agree and monitor Welsh Language Schemes with public organisations. These schemes set out how they will treat the Welsh and English languages on a basis of equality. There are currently over 500 active Language Schemes. The Board also undertakes extensive promotional and development work to encourage use of the Welsh language, especially by young people and in communities where there are significant numbers or percentages of Welsh-speakers. Supported by an active research programme, the Board is highly regarded internationally for its expert knowledge of minority language development and bilingualism.
