Viridis Energy (TSXV:VRD) is a Canadian renewable energy manufacturing company specializing in wood pellet biomass. Biomass is a widely accepted and clean alternative to burning coal in order to generate electricity. This low carbon generation method is sustainable and unlike solar and wind, can be relied upon as baseload power. Countries such as Canada, the UK, Netherlands, France and other parts of Europe as well as South Korea and Japan are co-firing with biomass to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, or have converted 100% to wood pellet biomass. Worldwide demand is expected to exceed 50 million annual tons by the year 2025. This demand also includes the use of wood pellets for home heating, district heating and CHPs (combined heat and power units). Home heating is growing dramatically in countries such as Austria, Italy, the U.K., U.S. and other regions.
Viridis Energy is one of the most diversified pellet operations in the world. With two manufacturing facilities in Canada and an aggregation business in the U.S., the company has annual capacity of over 300,000 tons. With plants on both the east and west coast, Viridis is well positioned to address the two growing markets. The Okanagan Pellet Company, based in BC produces a high quality premium pellet for the residential market. We offer three brands of Okanagan Pellets(tm), which are among the top brands in the residential markets.
Our second facility, Scotia Atlantic Biomass, is based in Nova Scotia and has the capacity to produce up to 120,000 tons annually. This facility currently produces industrial pellets for power generation. Viridis Merchants is the brokerage arm and has contracts with several pellet producers in North America.
