Information
This Project, sponsored by Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, allows volunteers over 50 to be actively involved in their own and their younger citizens' protection. Volunteers have four main objectives:(1) educate the public about scams and frauds through relaxed lectures - teaching seniors how to avoid being a victim - previous complaint history as examples,(2) manage consumer cases including those referred by the Attorney General's office or requested of the Project by other sources such as local or sheriff law enforcement departments. (3) serve as eyes and ears to inform the Attorney General's office of current issues affecting seniors, and(4) on occasion assist law enforcement as actors with undercover operations.Seniors Vs Crime is responsible for recovering millions of dollars for seniors who were intentional or unintentional victims of con artists or honest businesses. Unethical businesses and individuals may believe that their senior target is venerable, when, in fact, the "target" may be working for the Attorney General or local law enforcement in an undercover role. SVC began in 1989 as a result of recommendations in an AARP and Attorney General study. More than 3,000 project volunteers work 2-3 hours per week at SVC offices located mostly within law enforcement facilities. Seniors Vs Crime annual reports are available on SeniorsvsCrime.ComFew volunteer opportunities permit this level of involvement for seniors in their own protection.
