The Regional Federal Courts (in Portuguese, Tribunais Regionais Federais, commonly called TRFs) are Brazilian appellate courts of the Brazil federal court system. There are currently five of these courts, one to each geographically defined Federal Justice region. They are composed primarily by career judges, promoted alternatively between seniority and merit. The Brazilian constitution mandates that a fifth of the members be lawyers and public prosecutors, chosen in an alternate manner. The Brazilian federal court system is divided nationally into five regions, defined geographically, each served by an appellate court. The Regional Federal Court of the 2nd Region is seated in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, this appellate court covers the states of EspĂrito Santo and Rio de Janeiro.
