The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland (RPSI) is an all-Ireland voluntary organisation (Charitable Status Nos: NIC102389 (NI) & CHY6141 (RoI)) dedicated to the conservation and operation of heritage trains. It is the only organisation in Ireland capable of carrying out the heavy engineering work required to restore and keep in working order steam locomotives and other rolling stock that are part of Ireland’s industrial and transport heritage.It holds an important collection of locomotives, rolling stock and artefacts relevant to Ireland’s industrial and transport heritage. Today the organisation is managed by a team of volunteers; they have six employees who are supported by around 150 working volunteers. RPSI has over 1,100 members from all over the world. RPSI are a proud holder of the Queens Award for Voluntary Services. In 2016, HM Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh traveled on 'Royal Train' (No.85 "Merlin" and 5 Mk2 carriages) from Coleraine to Bellarena. RPSI is currently working towards the launch of the new Whitehead Railway Museum. The planned launch for the museum is 1st March 2017, further details will be available at www.steamtrainsireland.com
