At Grow Bioplastics, we have developed a low-cost, bio-based biopolymer made from lignin that can be processed into biodegradable agricultural films. Lignin is a natural product found in all trees and grasses and is produced at a rate of over 1 million tons per year globally as a waste product from the paper industry. With the growing interest in cellulosic ethanol as a renewable fuel source, new producers of lignin are coming on-line each year and are aggressively looking for marketable uses of this material to improve the economics of their refineries. Unlike oil-based plastics, our technology converts lignin into biopolymer films without the need for high-energy chemical processes and large volumes of hazardous solvents.
