Aikido can be translated as “the way to harmony with universal energy”. Aikido is an effective self-defense or martial style that safely and very effectively pacifies an attacker without injury. It is largely devoid of punches and kicks, which can cause damage anger and often escalates situations rather than resolving them.
Judo (meaning "the gentle way") is a modern martial art and Olympic sport rooted in the ancient forms of Jujutsu - the combat arts of the Japanese samurai warriors. It was developed in Japan in the late nineteenth century and combines the best and most practical techniques into a single system. Judo features a wide range of fast-moving techniques in the form of throws, strangle-holds, joint-locks, some striking techniques, and pins used to subdue an opponent and win points in the competiton format.
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art meaning "the art of hand and foot" and is a combination of combat technique, self-defense, sport, exercise, entertainment, and philosophy. The art emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, using the leg's greater reach and power to disable the opponent from a distance. Taekwondo is famed for its employment of kicking techniques, which distinguishes it from martial arts such as Karate.
