About Data Science For Social Good Charlotte

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) is partnering with the University of Chicago (UChicago) and Nova School of Business and Economics (Lisbon, Portugal) to create the Data Science for Social Good Global Initiative.

The Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) Fellowship is a summer program that started at UChicago four years ago and the first time launched in Portugal in 2017, designed to train aspiring data scientists to work on data mining, machine learning, big data, and data science projects with social impact. The DSSG Summer Fellowship program aims to work closely with governments and nonprofits, enabling DSSG fellows to take on real-world problems, ranging from education, health, energy, public safety, and transportation to economic and international development.

During this three-month experience in the DSSG summer fellowship, fellows learn, hone, and apply their data science, analytical, and coding skills to collaborate in a fast-paced, team-driven environment. Fellows also learn from mentors coming from industry and academia. 

In the summer of 2018, the Data Science Initiative's Partnership for Social Good is planning to launch DSSG fellowship program at UNC Charlotte. This program will include 5-6 project partners, 18-20 fellows, program organizers, a program manager, 2 project managers, 3 technical mentors, faculty members, technical support, administrative support, and volunteers.
