Lack of efficiency in laboratory test utilization has resulted in large waste in health care resources. Eliminating unnecessary laboratory testing while improving outcome and quality of medical care has become a major challenge for controlling laboratory expenditure in evidence-based medical practices. CPLSE aims to deliver clinical laboratory services with a web-enabled expert system that provides physicians with guidance for test utilization at the point of decision making. The same system also provides patients and the general public direct access to laboratory testing information and services to help them proactively manage their health. For healthcare institutions and third party payers, this system creates a new paradigm that allows the implementation of a cost-effective, evidence-based laboratory medicine practice.
