Many people ask us if the word "black" in our name is still relevant in this current dispensation?“Black” is not a term that can refer to a specific person, not anymore. It does not separate one from the other judging by the colour of their skin, their background or genes. “Black” is a belief, a mind-set, a culture and a movement. This is why we are founded on the principle of non-racialism, making us an organisation that embraces all people. All people who are united in the ideals that we hold as an organisation. Our organisation was formed at a period whereby white supremacy and black victimization was the norm. This was the time where “Black” was referenced, with cruelty, towards people with more pigment than others, who were considered better as slaves rather than equally able thinkers, leaders and intellects which they were. We cannot remove this substantial original reason for our existence. Over the years “Black” has evolved to be the very word that wraps up the agenda of a transition towards transformation. Because of the cruel source of the word “Black” the movement that tries to curb any elements that depict acts of injustices is a movement that has embraced the very word “black” to be a symbol of fighting against elements of the past that exist till this day. The goal of transformation is encompassed in this name and is truly relevant till this day. Until the founding principles of this organisation are irrelevant in this country the name “Black” Lawyers association Student Chapter shall remain relevant. “Black” thus is anyone who subscribes to our cause and is willing to take progressive action in advancing it.BLAsc through its Branches facilitate workshops, dialogues and conferences that allow Students to interact with various leaders and established legal professionals. Furthermore, the BLAsc facilitates Vac Work Programs for its members to receive practical experience in the profession.
