Established in 1994, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management. It is one of the three so-called "Rio conventions" that sprang from the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. The other two Rio conventions are the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD).
