Underwriters Laboratories is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the discovery and application of scientific knowledge. We conduct rigorous independent research, analyze safety data, create innovative education solutions, and develop standards that guide the safe and sustainable use of new and emerging technologies. As a trusted safety science leader, we also facilitate collaborative research projects with a wide range of global stakeholders. Because research alone cannot advance public safety, we convene forums where scientists, policymakers, industry leaders and safety professionals can address global safety challenges, discuss issues and share knowledge through safety education and public outreach initiatives. Since our founding in 1894, we’ve brought together experts to help drive a wider conversation on safety science research. As we step into the future, we will continue to support transformative change in pursuit of a safer, more secure and sustainable world. By sharing our findings broadly through white papers, educational modules, toolkits and standards, we encourage the adoption of our research to accelerate progress, delivering information that can prompt behavioral and policy changes, which in turn can lead to safer communities. Our wholly owned subsidiary, UL Inc., advances our shared public safety mission. We fund our work through grants, the licensing of standards documents and the business activities of UL Inc., which conducts testing, verification and certification, and provides training and advisory services, along with data-driven reporting and decision-making tools for customers around the world.
