The Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union was created on 28 November 1994 as a rational response to the translation needs of a large number of European agencies and offices.
Its mission is to meet the extensive and growing translation needs of European agencies, offices and bodies as well as to absorb any surplus work of the Institutions which have their own translation services. The Centre also actively participates in inter-institutional cooperation with a view to rationalising working methods and achieving global economies of scale.
The Centre is an agency governed by European public law, with legal personality. It has its own financial resources constituted by the transfers from the agencies, offices and institutions in exchange for services provided.
The Centre is established in Luxembourg, in accordance with the decision taken by the Heads of State and Government of 29 October 1993 on the location of the seats of certain decentralised agencies.
