Starting as home to Native Tlingit, the city of Skagway flourished during the famous Klondike Gold Rush at the end of the 19th Century. Today, Skagway is one of the busiest cruise ship destinations in the world, seeing almost one million tourists in the summer seasons. "The Skagway News" has proudly served as this unique community’s source of information and news for 40 years. With a winter circulation of 800 newspapers, and summertime circulations of 1,000 papers, we directly tap into the living heart of the town: Its more than 900 year-round residents. The newspaper’s reach doesn’t stop at Skagway’s borders, however. The Skagway News is sold in Haines, Juneau and in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. It is mailed to nearly 550 subscribers from Skagway to Sweden. Our award-winning coverage is hyper-local, focusing on the news that impacts Skagway residents both seasonal and temporary. Our summertime Fish This! column, which has won the Best Sports & Outdoors Column award from the Alaska Press Club years in a row, is loved even by readers who hate fishing (this includes our current editor). Other newspaper highlights are our Police & Fire Blotter and "Heard on the Wind," both of which capture the spirit of Skagway in humorous ways. We feature a summertime internship program - skagwaynews.com/internship - and also produce a single-issue summer newspaper for cruise ship passengers called "The Skaguay Alaskan."
