TONO eies og styres av opphavere (komponister og sangtekstforfattere) og musikkforlag, og forvalter de økonomiske opphavsrettighetene i musikken de har skapt. TONO gir tillatelse til bruk av beskyttet musikk for eksempel på radio, TV, internett, konsert og kino mot betaling, og overfører hvert år sitt økonomiske resultat til rettighetshavere i musikk som har blitt spilt offentlig. TONO har per 2021 mer enn 37 000 medlemmer, men arbeider også for millioner av opphavere og musikkforlag fra verden for øvrig.
