Sawyer Smith became involved with Jersey City when he opened his first business, Basic Food & Beverage in 2000. He had been working as a real estate broker in the Greenwich Village for a number of years since his arrival from Los Angeles in the mid 90’s. At his friend’s insistence, he visited Jersey City, and immediately saw its potential and went about renovating a prominent corner store that had been vacant for more than a decade. When he sold the business and opened his real estate brokerage firm in Union Square of Manhattan in 2002, Silverman invited him to join them as a marketing director for their Majestic Jersey City development. He jumped at the chance to join the company, which shared the same vision of building a community and of Jersey City’s potential. Since his joining Silverman, he and Paul Silverman designed and opened Beechwood Café to fill the void in Van Vorst Park neighborhood. He is also a partner and founder of Smith & Chang General Goods which opened in January of 2010 and is located in Hamilton Square. Known for his patience, entrepreneurial spirit and creative marketing, he has worked with Silverman for almost a decade bringing changes to Jersey City.
