Food waste is an epidemic on a national and household level. In the United States, approximately 1/3 of produced food is lost or wasted at the source, retail, and home level. Within a U.S. household, homes on average throw away 1/4 of their total grocery intake. The problem does not only concern the physical food waste, but also involves this overextended industry’s misuse of human and geographical resources. These statistics are even more shocking when considered within the context of a world hunger crisis.
In the last decade, advancing technology has solved an increasing number of inefficiencies in our daily lives. With only a phone, homeowners are able to easily control their home security, temperature and media systems; however, kitchens have not been largely impacted. Food waste is not always noticeable on the individual level, but if optimized, could improve a household’s grocery finances by up to the 25% average food loss margin.
