About Nu Metro
We have a history going back to the first Metro Theatre in downtown Johannesburg, which opened in 1932. In 1988, our name became Nu Metro.
No stranger to innovation, we introduced luxury cinemas to South Africa in 2001, with the Nu Metro Cinema Privé concept. In 2002, we launched the Girls’ Night Out monthly movie outing—a concept that has become hugely successful, and we are flattered that it has its share of imitators. Our first digital cinema was launched in December, 2006, and now every screen on our circuit is fully digital. In 2014, we launched the immersive, large-screen, 4K, 11.1-channel surround cinema concept, called Xtreme. Our luxury, business-class cinemas are VIP, and we’re also South Africa’s exclusive outlet for multi-sensory 4DX technology.
