Crowdsourcing teacher observation. 20,000,000 teacher observations must be completed by 100,000 principals and assistant principals every year. That's a 200:1 ratio! There aren't enough hours in the day and the stress of the process is leading to record levels of turnover in principals and assistant principals. Not to mention the process doesn't help teachers. Furthermore, most principals and assistant principals are observing teachers out of their domain (e.g., a former English teacher observing and evaluating a Science teacher) and therefore lack credibility with the teachers. The current observation process is expensive and it's broken. And, it's getting worse as Race to the Top and other legal mandates make it a requirement that more time be spent providing very high quality teachers observations. With increasing emphasis on performance-based teaching observation and evaluation systems, there is a critical need for more efficient review processes that deepen dialogues between observers and teachers.
