Hydrobiology

Hydrobiology was incorporated in 2001 by Andy Markham and Ross Smith. The initial vision for Hydrobiology was to provide high-level scientific consulting services within a commercial framework. That vision exists today. Hydrobiology was initially run from a home office in Wynnum and a rented office at the QCAT Centre, Pullenvale. The company's first projects were for Local and State Governments involving an ecological review of the Willawong Remediation Site and a River Habitat and Processes Study for the Logan River respectively. Casual employees were initially used to assist with project work, but a full-time employee was soon appointed. Initially the technical focus was on aquatic biology and hydrology, but our services now include all aspects of freshwater and marine aquatic environments and include water and sediment chemistry, ecotoxicology, river management and fluvial geomorphology. Hydrobiology developed a wide client base both within Australia and offshore, particularly PNG, South East Asia, Africa and the Western Pacific. Mining has always been an important market sector, particularly for offshore work, while other important markets have included local and state government, ports authorities and oil and gas. In 2006 Hydrobiology opened an office in Perth to take advantage of regional opportunities and currently maintains an in-country presence in PNG. The company is now a well-established and recognised provided of high-level scientific consulting services to a range of domestic and international clients.
