EyeWire is a game to map the brain played by over 175,000 people in 150 countries play. One of the world's largest and fastest growing citizen science projects, EyeWire solves a scalability problem in neuroscience: mapping the brain. It takes tens of human hours to decipher, i.e. map, the intricate branches of even a single neuron. Yet there are billions of neurons in a single brain. EyeWire crowdsources this analysis, serving neural reconstructions as 3D puzzles in a game interface. The goals of EyeWire are threefold: Make discoveries relating neural wiring to function; Engage the world in neuroscience and the scientific process; Educate both students and the general public about the brain. Created in 2012. EyeWire's first scientific discovery is published in Nature (May 2014).
