Clean Slate is a social enterprise based in the West of England and London supporting long-term unemployed people into paid work. We offer peer-based community engagement, employer-led recruitment and training, digital inclusion initiatives, and social enterprises that provide paid work experience for jobseekers in the form of Clean Slate Distribution and The Handy Help Co. We believe Clean Slate is re-writing the rule book on helping unemployed people facing barriers to work. We focus on the present and the future, not the past, recognise jobseekers' abiility to help themselves and each other, re-activate them by trusting them with paid work in our enterprises, and respect individuals' need for their own package of support and opportunity. We also believe employers have more of a role to play in combating unemployment and under-employment. Long-term unemployed people feel written off and often they are right - not only by employers but in the media and political arena where they are generally demonised as 'scroungers'. Until this changes, with investment in training and development for people with weaker job skills, local unemployed people will continue lose out to jobseekers able to compete from across the world. Through Clean Slate's in-house enterprises, we prove what many jobseekers can achieve with the right support and opportunity.
