Chess Setup
CHESS SETUP project - Combined HEat SyStem by using Solar Energy and heaT pUmPs - is an EC financed H2020 four-year project, considered one of the best solution in terms of energy efficiency and primary energy consumption.
Its objective is to design, implement and promote a reliable, efficient and profitable system able to supply heating and hot water in buildings mainly from renewable sources. The proposed system is based on an optimal combination of solar thermal (ST) energy production, seasonal heat storage and the use of highly efficient heat pumps. The used solar panels are hybrid photovoltaic and solar thermal (PV-ST) panels, a promising solution for also producing the electricity consumed by the heat and water pumps of the heating system and part of the electricity consumed in the building.
The integration of other energy sources as biomass or heat waste and the possibility to integrate the system with other electricity or cooling technologies are also considered to make the system suitable for a broad range of conditions.
The system operation is optimized according to some external factors, such as the electricity price or the users' requirements by using a smart control and management systems developed specifically for the project.
It is currently demonstrated in three pilot experiences with different boundary conditions and using different heat sources and storage systems:
- In Manlleu (Spain)
- In Corby (England)
- In Sant Cugat del Vallès (Spain)
