Alexa Schlein is a dedicated Graduate Researcher at the University of Washington, where she is actively engaged in advancing our understanding of social media dynamics during critical events. Under the mentorship of Dr. Kate Starbird, Alexa is spearheading a project funded by the Clinical/Community Research Integration Support Program (CRISP) that explores how communities adapt and respond during crises, specifically focusing on the 2021 Texas Power Crisis. Her work involves qualitative analysis of social media data, including tweets, TikToks, and Instagram Stories, to identify patterns of resilience, information dissemination, and behavioral adaptations among affected populations. This research not only contributes valuable insights into crisis communication but also informs the development of more effective, human-centered digital interventions.
In her role, Alexa leverages a diverse skill set that spans wireframing, design sprints, and image analysis, integrating technical expertise with a human-centered approach to research. Her background in Human-Centered Design & Engineering equips her to analyze complex social phenomena through a multidisciplinary lens, combining qualitative methods with technical tools like ImageJ and CAD. Additionally, her proficiency in systems engineering, medical device R&D, and robot programming demonstrates her capacity to approach problems from multiple angles, fostering innovative solutions. Fluent in Spanish, Alexa is also adept at cross-cultural communication, which enhances her ability to interpret social media content from diverse communities.
Looking ahead, Alexa is eager to expand her expertise into user experience (UX) design, aiming to create digital tools that facilitate better crisis response and community resilience. Her comprehensive skill set, combined with her passion for human-centered research, positions her as a promising professional in the fields of UX, social media analysis, and crisis informatics.
