Organic Garden Coordinator at Westminster College | Salt Lake City, Utah, United States

About Alexa Leith

As the Organic Garden Coordinator at Westminster College, Alexa Leith plays a pivotal role in fostering sustainable practices and promoting environmental stewardship within the campus community. In her second year as an Environmental Science major, Alexa is not only gaining theoretical knowledge but also applying it practically through her work in the Environmental Center. Her responsibilities include scheduling and planning garden maintenance, which involves coordinating with peers and faculty to ensure that the garden thrives while serving as a living laboratory for students interested in organic gardening and sustainable agriculture.

One of Alexa's key projects focuses on enhancing inclusivity and accessibility in the garden space. She actively initiates independent proposals aimed at making the garden more welcoming to all students, regardless of their background or gardening experience. This initiative aligns with her commitment to environmental justice, as she believes that everyone should have the opportunity to engage with and learn from nature. By supervising and educating volunteers, Alexa not only imparts essential gardening skills but also cultivates a sense of community among participants. Her collaborative leadership style fosters teamwork, allowing her to effectively engage with community members for activities such as planting, weeding, composting, and mulching.

With a strong foundation in analytical skills and project management, Alexa leverages tools like RStudio and Microsoft Excel to track garden progress and analyze data related to crop yields and soil health. Her problem-solving abilities and organizational skills ensure that the garden operates smoothly, while her passion for environmental science drives her to create a more sustainable and inclusive campus environment. As she prepares to graduate in the spring of 2024, Alexa is poised to make significant contributions to the field of environmental science, equipped with hands-on experience and a deep commitment to community engagement.
