About Aidan Westphal

Aidan Westphal is a dedicated Software Developer at the Rensselaer Center for Open Source, where he leverages his extensive programming expertise to push the boundaries of Computer Vision and Machine Learning. Currently, Aidan is spearheading an innovative project titled "NeRF or Nothin," which utilizes Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) to execute Structure from Motion on user-uploaded videos. This cutting-edge implementation not only enhances the traditional methods of 3D reconstruction but also integrates advanced techniques such as Gaussian Splatting, allowing users to generate immersive three-dimensional "flythroughs" with remarkable detail and accuracy.

Aidan's role involves a multifaceted approach to software development, utilizing a diverse skill set that includes proficiency in languages such as Java, C#, C++, and JavaScript, as well as frameworks like Flask for backend development and React.js for creating dynamic web interfaces. His adeptness with tools like Docker ensures that the deployment of applications is streamlined and efficient, making it easier to manage dependencies and environments. Aidan's familiarity with COLMAP, a powerful Structure from Motion and Multi-View Stereo software, further enhances the project's capabilities, allowing for robust 3D reconstructions from 2D images.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Aidan is passionate about outdoor activities, often found bouldering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's rock climbing wall or exploring the scenic trails of the Adirondacks. This balance of technical prowess and personal interests not only enriches his life but also fuels his creativity and problem-solving skills in the realm of software development. As Aidan continues to innovate at the intersection of technology and user experience, he remains committed to advancing the field of Computer Vision and Machine Learning through impactful research and development.
