Armstrong has a B.S. from University of California, Santa Cruz in 1978. After completing his undergraduate studies, Armstrong worked as a research associate at the National Democratic Institute. From 1984-1988, he served as an assistant professor at the University of Utah until he was appointed a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1988. Armstrong is currently a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz and has held adjunct facultyhips at the University of Utah and the University of California, Santa Cruz.Armstrong's research interests are in the political economy of development, international relations, and Chinese politics.
