Simson Garfinkel's Email

I am a Senior Advisor in the Information Access Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. My primary research involves privacy issues and big-data, and in particular the development of practical approaches for releasing large, useful data sets while protecting personal privacy. In addition to my full-time job, I also will be teaching Digital Forensics at George Mason University and Big Data Analytics at Georgetown University. Prior to joining NIST I was a tenured professor at the Naval Postgraduate School, part of the US Department of Defense. I am the author or co-author of roughly 50 peer-reviewed academic research papers and 14 books on computing, including Database Nation: The Death of Privacy in the 21st Century, and Practical UNIX and Internet Security (co-authored with Gene Spafford), which sold more than 250,000 copies. I have a PhD in Computer Science from MIT, a Master's of Science in Journalism from Columbia University, and three undergraduate degrees from MIT in Chemistry, Political Science, and the Science, Technology and Society program.
